Spore has DRM. No one likes DRM. Every Game Publisher with DRM has Had to Change their DRM so it is less restrictive thereby lessening its so-called effectivness. The only people who complain about DRM are honest shoppers/users for the game. HAX0Rz just continue to crack the game and playon. (Checktorrents for hAx). And yet the publishers persist, the game journos say 'whats the big deal your online anyway' but then we can not trust them anymore (we think we know what happens to game journos that dont toe the line for the mags advertisers. If we try to get a line on what a game may be like to play before it comes out, well, we may be told anything even lies just to build a positive spin. http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/gamesblog/2007/dec/12/moregamesindustrysleazepr
The companys have released the outlines of that Which the DRM does but only after the outcry and NOT ON THE BOX! see their site for details. When I buy a game I like to Play Lan with friends and family (not online with strangers so much) everyone in the same building yelling trashtalk and laughing out loud (yes i think thats how you spell it). I also like to MOD my games so they reflect my taste and interests more as well as adding to replay value and when I am done with it I want to sell it on and put the dollars towards a new game. DRM does not let me do these things. I put up with bioshock as I thought that it was worth it, but there were a lot of times I would have liked to reload and play it, but not so-much that it was worth burning an activation. So I find DRM restricts my enjoyment of a game and know that if the DRM requires online activation I will not get my moneys worth from a game. Other peaple may not want to do as much as I with their game and for them DRM may not be a problem, unless they try to activate the game and the activation servers are down.
When I buy a game putting my hard earned money on the counter or creditcard Number or paypal password I expect to own that game outright and if I have to pay to use their servers thats ok as long as I can play on free servers if I choose; but, I do not want to be effectivly renting the game being told i can only install for a few times and then "We'll talk about it"
I buy that game I own that game and I will play it when I want How I want and with whomever I damn well choose to! The push towards limited activations and software that can only be used online is FOR PROFIT OF COMPANYS ONLY there is no real benefit for the consumer. The money lost to piracy, if was too much and they made no profit then they would not make games. They are in it for the money and only for the money if there was no money they would not do it even with piracy they make enough profit to keep going. same with hollywood. they kick and scream about piracy because anything that prevents MAXIMUM profit in their eyes must be irradicated. If they could get the Poor and uneducated in third world countrys to make games for a pittance they would and they would keep pushing to see how low they could get the wages. They want MAXIMUM PROFIT and care little how its achieved. So if you say its OK for the DRM because we are online anyway then you are not thinking ahead, capitalism is a long term view and if you give in a little they will keep chipping away over time because once you give in a bit they will keep at you and at you, taking a little here a little there untill one morning you wake up at your allocated time and go to your allocatted job to earn your allocated points for your 'social standing appropriate' allocated products.
